Alicia Vikander is proving that she is worthy of the title, Tomb Raider. Ahead of her appearance at San Diego Comic Con next week, the Academy Award winner gave a glimpse at what fans would see in the rebooted video game movie.
Getting Thrown Off A River
Warner Bros. is bringing some of its most anticipated blockbuster movies like Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, the adaptation of Stephen King’s It, the DC slate including Justice League and, of course, the anticipated reboot of Tomb Raider. The project has already wrapped up filming last month and fans can expect a lot of exciting announcements as well as (probably) a short sneak peek at Hall H.
But, as early as now, Vikander is getting fans hyped for their appearance at the fan convention and for the release of the movie in 2018. In an interview with EW, the 28-year-old talked about the tough action scenes she has to endure as Lara Croft.
“For one action scene, we used the London venue for Olympic rafting,” she shared. “They threw me down that river — with my hands tied — about 50 times. I didn’t need to act, just react!”
Getting thrown into a river is likely one of the actions scenes that will be included in the final cut of the movie. Directed by Roar Uthaug, the adaptation loosely based on the rebooted Crystal Dynamics video games will see Lara at the beginning of her career and in a search for her missing father. The movie, which started filming in January, shot in London, where Lara grew up, and in South Africa, where she will face some tough challenges that will shape her to become the Tomb Raider.
As Vikander explained, Lara in the upcoming movie will not be the seasoned archaeologist that fans know and loved from the original video game series and the movie adaptations that starred Angelina Jolie. Instead, while she still has the characteristics of the popular video game heroine, her version of Lara will be a little more modern and a bit naive.
“She has all the fierce, tough, curious, intelligent traits, but we’ve stripped away all of her experience,” the actor commented. ” She hasn’t gone on an adventure just yet. She thought he was a stuck up business person living in the modern youth culture of suburban London, but then this whole box of information. This is the beginning.”
Reintroducing An Iconic Character
Vikander also addressed the original movies from the early 2000s. She admitted that Jolie contributed to making Lara Croft such a cultural icon that even her own mother knows who the character is.
She also reiterated that her upcoming movie will be different because it shows a side of the character that has not been seen before on the big screen. “[T]his is a beautiful way of showing a very loved character from more angles,” she added.
Moreover, the actor talked about why it is so important to have strong female characters on the big screen. Vikander has in the past played the role of kicka** women on screen like Ava of Ex Machina and Gaby from The Man from U.N.C.L.E. However, she did feel sad over the fact that not a lot of stories about women are being told.
“I went to the cinema and saw Wonder Woman the other day. It’s a mixture of joy and sadness pouring over me,” she said. “I wondered how many stories there have there been throughout the years that haven’t been told.”
The upcoming Tomb Raider movie will also star Dominic West as Lord Richard Croft and Walter Goggins as the villain Mathias Vogel. The movie will be released on Mar. 16, 2018.
