People applying for visas around the world will have to fill out a new questionnaire. Applicants will be asked about their social media management over the past five years and biographical information dating back 15 years.
The new questions are part of President Donald Trump's efforts to strengthen the investigation of potential visitors to the United States. They were approved on 23 May by the Office of Management and Budget.
Consular officials can apply for all previous passport numbers, five years of social media information, email addresses and phone numbers.
They can also request 15 years of biographical information including directions, employment and travel history.
However, critics have said the new questions would be grueling and would lead to lengthy processing delays, discouraging international students and scientists from traveling to the United States.
The State Department said earlier that the stricter investigation would apply to visa applicants "who have been determined to warrant further scrutiny regarding terrorism or other ineligibility of visas related to national security."
