There are several thriving movie scenes in Nigeria – English, Yoruba, Igbo And Hausa and actors and actresses are no longer rated along ethnic lines because many are crossing over easily from one side to the other.
Stargist.com presents some of the actors who feature in the major film scenes in Nigeria.
1. Sola Sobowale
Sola Sobowale is a bonafide scene stealer, a thorough thespian who is not restricted by roles or audiences. In the early ’90s she appeared in the infamous (for that era) Yoruba home video, Asewo To Re Mecca (The Prostitute That Went To Mecca) and also played Toyin Tomato in the Wale Adenuga series Super Story that her fame became known country wide and across ethnic lines. She has since then acted in close to 200 movies, both in her native Yoruba language and in English.
2. Jide Kosoko
Jide Kosoko is one of the most popular veteran actors in the movie industry who has as much presence in the Yoruba films as in English films. He is so talented he is considered by colleagues to be a chameleon when it comes to assuming characters to translate his roles.
3. Rachael Oniga
Rachael Oniga is one of the sectors both English and Yoruba recognisable and most sought after actresses. Born to an Urhobo father and an Isoko mother, Oniga hails from Eku in Delta State. Her multi-lingual acting ability has served her well as an actress and she has on that account done more movies that she can even recollect.
4. Bimbo Akintola
Very versed and talented Bimbo has never disappointed her fans and admirers since her superlative role in award winning ‘Owo Blow’ released several years ago.
Till date, Bimbo has remained a force in both English and yoruba movie sector. Her appearance yoruba flicks may not be constant, but she is one of those actresses soaring in the two areas.
5. Saidi Balogun
Saidi Balogun’s hit movies like Eti Keta and Modupe Temi, show he understands the rudiments of filmmaking. Though Balogun is a well-known face in Yoruba films, he has also featured in many English films, including Above Love and Foreign Affairs.
6. Funsho Adeolu
Funso is one actor that can conveniently switch between Yoruba and English movies but he has featured mostly in Yoruba movies.
7. Kelvin Ikeduba
Kelvin Ikeduba is widely known by his fans as the Bad Boy of Nollywood. Though he started with English movies but his foray into the Yoruba genre of films has been greeted with enormous success. Kelvin is one one successful cross over actor.
8. Clarion Chukwurah
Clarion Chukwura who hails from Anambra state but has good knowledge of Yoruba language. She is one versatile actress who has been able to fit comfortably well into both Yoruba and English movies.
9. Kehinde Bankole
Kehinde Bankole is a Nollywood actress who is flawless in delivering her roles both in yoruba and english movies and in return has earned her many accolades and awards. Kehinde is one popular cross over act.
10. Funke Akindele
Funke Akindele flirted with English Nollywood movies but her career was established in the Yoruba Nollywood industry. Akindele featured in a string of impressive Yoruba and English movies making her one of the new and bankable faces in the industry.
11. Rykardo Agbor
Good-looking Rykardo started life as a model before his journey into acting who acts in English and Yoruba movies. Rykardo is one very versatile actor who switches between the languages with ease.
12. Bukky Wright
Mother of two, Bukky has become the toast of many movie buffs because of her dexterity at interpreting her roles both in Yoruba and English movies. Her proficiency and ability to interpret roles almost perfectly has endeared her to the heart of both English and Yoruba movie producers. Apart from being a formidable cross-over queen she has also become a producer with four Yoruba flicks to show for it. She started off as a Yoruba actress, today the two sectors have become familiar terrain to her. And she’s even on a running English soap.
13. Foluke Daramola
Hugely busty, dark and lovely. In her early days, she was more of a screen actress. Foluke became popular through her spectacular role in the soap Palace some years ago. She thereafter made an in-road into the English movie scene that has today made her one of the queens in Nollywood. At the moment, Foluke has continued to show her skill in the Yoruba movie sector with and the English scene without any fuss.
14. Ayo Adesanya
Ayo Adesanya is a well known English actress. Her inroad into the Yoruba movie scene came through Iru-Oka. She has since followed it up with Eebu Ika which she produced alongside Gboko Gboko (Husband Snatcher) and ‘Otelemuye. Ayo has starred in numerous English flicks before her foray into the Yoruba movie sector. Her major break was in an English flick titled ‘Most Wanted’ a few years ago. She’s now a popular face as a cross-over queen.
15. Shan George
There is a foreign accent to her Yoruba, but that is even part of the attraction to this mulatto-fair controversial and blunt Shan. Having made her mark as a talented English movie queen, Cross River-born Shan was one of the first to dabble into the Yoruba movie sector. Although her deficiency in the language was very obvious and questionable, the daring lady showcased a lot of skill in flicks such as, ‘K.K.K’, Larinlodu’, Timba Taye Wa alongside other top Yoruba actress and actress in that genre.
