See The List Of 42 “Banned In Europe” Anti-Malaria Drugs Still Sold In Nigeria

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday raised the alarm that 42 anti-malaria drugs that have been banned in Europe are still sold in hospitals and pharmacies across the country.

Thus, the lawmaker mandated its Committee on Health to investigate circulation and consumption in the country of Anti-Malaria Drugs banned by the European Union.

The probe followed the adoption of a motion by Senator Theodore Orji (PDP, Abia-Central).

Orji noted that recently the European Union banned the sale and consumption of 42 anti-malaria drugs in all countries within the European Union.

One of the banned drugs is Artesunate which is widely used in Nigerian households.

While stressing the need to prioritise investigation into the drugs as they were considered dangerous, the senator said:

“The reason for the ban is that they are considered dangerous and leads to kidney failure and yet all these drugs are still stockpiled, sold and consumed in Nigeria which can be of great danger to the health of our people.”

Reacting to this, Senate President Bukola Saraki – who presided over the plenary – mandated the committee on health to investigate the matter and report back to the Senate for appropriate action.
