A survey reveals the tried-and-true ways to make a winning impression.

It’s no secret that first dates are basically job interviews with drinks. They’re intense and can make or break a potential relationship—but no pressure.

So obviously, you want to max out your chances of showing someone a good time from the get-go.
Dating app Hinge just conducted a survey of more than 8,000 of its members in New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, and Washington, D.C., and found a ton of great information on the best first dates, as well as a bunch of additional details you didn’t even know you needed to know about first dates until now.
The data is broken down by city, but the findings are pretty similar across the board.
Apparently, you can’t go wrong with taking someone to a movie or show, bar, or restaurant the first time you officially hang out.
How popular each option is varies based on where you live—60 percent of people in D.C. and L.A. say that a movie or show is the best way to land a second date, while a bar or restaurant date is more popular in Boston.
A date at the park is a surprising dark horse, with the majority of Bostonians and Chicagoans preferring it over other types of dates.
When it comes to actually landing a date, what you plan to do matters.
The majority of people say suggesting drinks is the way to get someone to say yes to a date, followed by coffee, lunch, and dinner.
Food can also make or break you—24 percent of people say they can’t turn down an offer of fried chicken, followed by vegan food (23 percent), and sushi (19 percent).
Pancakes are apparently a no-no—only nine percent of people said they’d say yes to that offer.
Of course, if someone is into you, they’d say yes to just about anything. But if you’re not sure about your chances, well, you know what to do.
