Nigeria Police Force operators in Abuja on Monday tore down dozens of Shiite protesters demanding the release of the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky. Demonstrators who converged in the office of the National Human Rights Commission had marched through the streets, displaying banners, demanding the release of Sheikh Zakzaky.
However, police personnel armed to the teeth, including the support of armored personnel carriers, mobilized to the scene and dispersed the demonstrators with the use of tear gas and water cannons. Prior to Monday's protest before the National Human Rights Commission, El Zakzaky's relentless supporters had held similar protests before the National Assembly but were also arrested by police.
There have been pro-El-Zakzaky protests across the country since his arrest with his wife and detention by the DSS in December 2016 after a bloody clash with the military in 2016 in Zaria, Kaduna state.
