Austria Enacts Legislation Banning The Use of Facial Veils, Obliges Asylum Seekers to Perform Unpaid Public Work

Faced with a huge migratory crisis that has significantly affected social life in Europe, some European countries have taken measures to maintain public order and fulfill their humanitarian obligations with migrants. Austria is the last to adopt these measures.
The country has passed new controversial legislation banning women from wearing Islamic facial veils in public. From October, police will begin to award fines of £ 130 to women who find themselves wearing burqas and niqabs at universities, courts or public transport.
The law also obliges immigrants to attend integration courses and asylum seekers to perform unpaid public services. Under new rules, immigrants who have a "good chance" to stay in Austria must attend a 12-month integration school where they will be taught German courses and learn the ethics, values and culture of the country. Refuse to adhere to the law will be affected by a profit cut.

The measure, backed by ruling parties, the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) and the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) has met with mixed receptions and 3,000 Muslim women took to the streets to protest against the ban in February.
Despite strict measures, there are some that include the far-right party FPÖ, which criticized the government for not imposing stricter measures. On the other hand, the left-wing president of the country, Alexander Van Der Bellen, insisted that all women should wear the handkerchief to combat Islamophobia. Speaking to the students of the House of the European Union in Vienna, she said: "It is the right of a woman ... to dress as she likes." That is my opinion on that. Can carry a handkerchief. "And if it continues - and I'm already in the next question - with today's rampant Islamophobia, the day will come when we should ask all women to wear a headscarf."
